Once again Chesham showed the ability to lose games that seemed to be theirs for the taking. This was a result that nobody could have predicted at half-time, after a one-sided half in which Chesham created numerous chances and seemed to be in total command. However Soham’s second equaliser on the hour changed the course of the game and the visitors looked more likely to steal it late on, although the goal that finally clinched it was comfortably offside.
There were two changes to the starting line-up, Danny Talbot and Danny Burnell coming in for Leon Archer and Dom Marsala. Chesham went straight on the attack and scored in the second minute, Chris Bangura and Dave Fotheringham combining to set up Danny Burnell who slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net from ten yards. Chesham showed the ability to open up the visitors’ defence at will, but were knocked back on ten minutes when a 30-yard shot from Dubi Ogbonna sailed into the top corner of the net to level the scores. However that was to be Soham’s only shot on goal in the first half as Chesham dominated. Danny Burnell looked to be offside as he ran on to John Kyriacou’s pass and slotted past the keeper but the ball came back off the post, then Burnell’s lay-off set up Steve Wales for a shot that flew narrowly wide. Ollie Adedeji then headed Danny Talbot’s corner back across goal from beyond the far post and Burnell’s back-header was just over the bar. Chesham eventually reclaimed the lead in the 32nd minute but needed a hand from visiting keeper Ian Pledger, who allowed Danny Talbot’s 30-yard free kick to slip under his body into the net. Chris Bangura pulled the ball back from the by-line to Danny Burnell who shot over from ten yards, Ollie Adedeji got his head to Steve Wales’ cross and Bangura just failed to get a touch on the ball, then a Wales header from Danny Talbot’s corner saw Pledger grab the ball at the second attempt.
Early in the second half Chris Bangura glanced a header wide from Steve Wales’ cross, then a good move down the right ended with the ball being played into the path of Michael Bardle whose low shot hit the side netting. At this stage it seemed merely a question of how many Chesham would score, but in the 59th minute Soham equalised with their second effort on goal. A neat interchange of passes between Michael Simpson and Simon Flanz ended with Flanz advancing into the area and scoring with a shot that bounced down off the bar and in. The goal changed the course of the game as Chesham became more frantic and started to give the ball away. Soham sub Andy Furnell played a one-two with Paul Jones and Jones’ shot was deflected over the bar, but at the other end Steve Wales won the ball on the edge of the area and curled a shot just over. As the game drew to a close a long cross from sub Sam Ledger was headed goalwards by Dom Marsala and the ball bounced away off a defender for a corner, but it was Soham who stole the points two minutes from time. Furnell was a good two yards offside as he ran through from the left but the linesman kept his flag down and Furnell rounded Hayward and scored. Chesham threw everyone forward late on, including Richard Hayward for a corner which was cleared and Simpson attempted to find the empty net from inside his own half but was just off target.
