Chesham Utd 0 - 3 Romulus

Postby Mickeygee » Sat Nov 21, 2009 6:45 pm

A scrappy game from beginning to end, played in steady rain throughout.

Chesham were in the game until shortly after halftime when 2 goals in 3 minutes, to add to Romulus's first half score, effectively killed off the match. Maybe it was just one of those days but Chesham's performance was very disappointing. They seemed unable to string 4 passes together. No scapegoats, this was a very poor all round team performance. We all know they can play a lot better than this.

Chesham's only shot on target came in about the 90th minute, which just about sums up the entertainment value.

To be fair to Andy L. no doubt things will improve when he has some of his key players back from injury, but when we had sunk to 0-3
I suspect most supporters wanted to see some immediate changes made to a team which wasn't making any headway.

I would think most of the spectators (about 220 ?) went home thinking there were better ways to spend a wet Saturday afternoon !

After all of the positives against Slough and Woodford, and a useful point at Stourport, this was a real disappointment. Romulus were well organised and committed but really only had one dangerous weapon - their aerial power. Chesham has struggled with other big, direct attacks before, and in monsoon conditions came up short again. Brown, the Romulus centre forward, was probably the key player on the pitch in the wind and driving rain - tall and physical. His headed goal after 10 minutes set the tone for the game.

The players certainly didn't look like they were all on-message - maybe the injury list and unusual formation distracted them. No Danny Talbot either. There were few stand-up-and be-counted performances - Mark Lambert (as ever) and Dave Fotheringham were honourable exceptions. Danny Burnell made a welcome return to the starting line up, but quickly became frustrated with the lack of service in a wider left channel position. The only classy move was Chesham's very first after only a few minutes - Wales making yards at pace in midfield, and and Darrell Cox testing the keeper away to his left after being put through with a slick pass. After that, not much.

The Cup match on Tuesday at Maidenhead will be an opportunity to get fired up, and put things back on track. After this result it will be a challenge though.

what a surprise.. yet again come up against a tall and physical team and we get battered, we have been here before so many times and until we learn how to play these teams at there own game we can forget getting out of this league !!

Back to drawing board Mr Lease and quickly please.. otherwise it will be curtains yet again, the B&B cup now to look forward too wow how exciting... it's amazing what a month in football can do to a team !!! :(

Clearly a bad at the office on Saturday - things just didn't work.

First of all, while I still think it's possible to win this league, my feeling is we have a play off team. That's not a bad thing, to be in the top 5 of the league is still an achievement and means you win more than you lose, I get the feeling we aren't truly consistent enough at the moment to win the league.

Why are we not consistent? I think if we look at home form it still is an issue and it might be because we are more of a counter attacking side and when teams like Romulus sit behind the ball they are very tough to break down. We're still better away from home - where counter attacking is more common.

I think there are times where we can look a bit one dimensional - if it's pace we can break sides down and create chances, we started to do that before the end on Saturday but it was one of 'those' games. This is not just through the formation, there's a couple of things, maybe Talbs would have made a difference, I do miss having Cooper on the bench too, maybe he wouldn't be the answer against a physical side but he does have guile.

I still think we don't take advantage of our excellent playing surface and get to passing the ball on the floor, we have a tendancy to go long because there is pace to exploit space, we just need a bit more variety in our approach.

It may not have made much difference on Saturday, things just didn't go right.
